Sri Krishna Janmasthami 2011

On the 22nd of August 2011 35 to 40 000 Mauritians visited out main ISKCON temples at Phoenix and Bon Accueil to have darshan of the presiding deities. Among the guests were Honourable Minister Bhaichoo, Honourable Minister Jeetah, Honourable Minister Bunwaree, Honourable Minister Dayal, Members of the opposition: Honourable Mr. Dulloo, Honourable Mr. Bodha and Mr. Dultamun, President of Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Fedearation. Sri Sri Radha Golokananda and Sri Sri Krishna Balarama, dressed in resplendent, hand embroidered new outfits , accepted the offerings brought for Them and in turn showered blessings upon all. Fruit plates were available at the entrance of the temple for those who had not had time to bring an offering from their home. Pujaris shared the Lord’s mercy with all those who came for His darshan by handing out flowers and fruits from the altar.

Those wishing to spend time at the temple on this special day were invited to a cultural programme from 6pm to midnight. The stage programme in the main pandal of both temples was also broadcast LIVE on MBC and included bhajans, classical dance, Lectures on the pastimes of Lord Krishna, dramas and the abhishek and arti of the deities of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna. Other pandals entertained the guests with children’s programmes, a musical band for the youth, dances and dramas. There was also facility for swinging bal Krishna, introduction to japa meditation, presentations on the forthcoming Sri Sri Radha Golokananda temple construction and cow protection. Free prasadam (a sanctified meal) and halvah (prasadi) were offered to all the guests. Srila Prabhupada, the founder acarya of ISKCON, was born the day after Sri Krishna Janmasthami so for the ISKCON devotees the celebration continued the next day. The guru’s appearance is celebrated as Vyasa-puja because he repeats the message of the scriptures compiled by Sri Vyasadeva. Over 4 000 devotees gathered at both temples to glorify Srila Prabhupada and honour a feast served in his honour. Photos of this auspicious celebration may be viewed here.
