Vanipedia - 4 years

welcome.jpg

On the 21st of March Vanipedia celebrated its first 4 years online. During this time over 300 devotees participated in thematically mapping Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings. And while Vaniquotes is still a work in progress, we have already attained a major achievement by creating over 13,000 categories and 72,000 pages and compiling over 1,680,000 quotes.

We should not underestimate the power of collaborative service, combined with online facility, to present Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings comprehensively. After four years of research and compiling, Vaniquotes is steadily becoming a valuable and authoritative repository of “what Śrīla Prabhupāda said.” Vaniquotes works like a transcendental labyrinth - not because we can’t get out, but rather because we do not want to get out. We are pulled into Śrīla Prabhupāda’s vani association, and we want to relish his love and expertise to purify us from our limitations and deliver us to pure devotional service. In Vaniquotes we have created many wiki page titles of verbatim statements of Śrīla Prabhupāda, and inside the pages we place the verbatim quotes. Pages contain anywhere from 1 quote up to a couple of hundred quotes, depending on the nature of the page. As every quote is linked to its original source, Śrīla Prabhupāda’s statements are always directly accessible in proper context. When creating pages we link each word of the page title to indexing categories, thus creating a natural, thematic presentation. The methodology is thorough while simultaneously both simple and complex. Already we have undertaken many comprehensive research projects.

Language is a substantial element of any culture giving it both character and depth. These 4000 categories are sorted by word endings, and the pages within them facilitate the reader to easily learn how Śrīla Prabhupāda used the English language to explain the eternal truths of Vedic culture and Krsna consciousness. With over 3,000 entries already created you can experience here a very interesting English and Sanskritdictionary compiled solely from the purports, lectures, conversations and letters of Śrīla Prabhupāda. And here you can encounter our highest level of organization of the categories. From the comprehensive research that has been compiled in Vaniquotes we will now begin to write introductory and summary Vanipedia articles. Our first test article has been recently completed. It is on the teachings of Lord Buddha as seen through the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda. As more of these articles are written, they will assist in helping a person who is not so familiar with Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings to become nicely acquainted with them. The first four years have been predominantly spent in developing our methodology and presentation and in training compilers. With additional support, we are ready to take Vanipedia to a whole new level by writing Vanipedia articles, opening up to multiple languages, and compiling the audio of Śrīla Prabhupāda to facilitate an even more dynamic delivery of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings.
