Prison Preaching in Mauritius

In 2006 an inmate of the Beau Bassin Central Prison made an official written request to ISKCON, Hare Krishna Land, Phoenix for the devotees to come and regularly teach him spiritual knowledge. Thus began regular prison preaching in Mauritius.

Three more detainees soon joined the one hour weekly session of systematically studying Srila Prabhupada’s books. The course was run under the aegis of Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture (BCEC). Three of the four students took the first examination and graduated.

One of the successful students has made a request for the Bhakti Diploma course comprising the study of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is. BCEC is eagerly awaiting the administrative clearance from the prison authorities to initiate the course.

A set of Srimad-Bhagavatam was also made available to the inmates and other Srila Prabhupada’s books and Back to Godhead magazines have been handed out to prison officers and a few prisoners.

We also pay regular visits to two inmates of the Richelieu Open Prison. One of them does regular service to the cows at the Nandagaon Goshalla.
