Srila Prahupada's Books

One of Srila Prabhupada’s greatest contributions to the world is his books. Although Srila Prabhupada spent 11 years circling the globe at an advanced age, founding temples, schools, training disciples and managing ISKCON, he dedicated much of his time to translating and writing. He would sleep only a few hours and chose the early morning hours from 1.30 to 4.30 a.m to work, dictating texts which his disciples would later type and edit.

Srila Prabhupada was extremely meticulous as he provided word for word English translations of Sanskrit and Bengali verses from Vaishnava texts. He would then give a full translation and ‘purport’ where he would comment on the verses in such a way that he preserved the spirit with which they were originally written. He translated, commented on and wrote over 70 volumes of transcendental literature, which is a most extraordinary feat for someone with so many other duties and commitments. Srila Prabhupada’s books have been translated into 50 languages and are used as school, college and university textbooks.

Srila Prabhupada’s books give people looking for the truth answers to all their questions. Although they explain spiritual knowledge in depth, they are easily readable. Srila Prabhupada knew that the contents of his books could bring peace to the world so he encouraged his disciples to distribute them to all levels of society. That is why you may meet a Hare Krishna devotee distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books on the street, showing you books at your home, or presenting them to your nearest library. Many people who have come into contact with Srila Prabhupada’s books in such ways have later confessed that reading these books changed their life forever and convinced them of the real goal of life.

Well-known scholars appreciate the lucidity, clarity and mood of Srila Prabhupada’s works and you can read some of their comments below:

"In this beautiful translation, Srila Prabhupada has caught the deep devotional spirit of the gitaand has supplied the text with an elaborate commentary in the truly authentic tradition of Sri Krishna Chaitanya, one of India's most important and influential saints."

Emeritus Professor of the History of Religions and

Bhagavad-gita As It Is is a deeply felt, powerfully conceived and beautifully explained work... I have never seen any other work on the gita with such an important voice and style. It is a work of undoubted integrity... It will occupy a significant place in the intellectual ethical life of modern man for a long time to come."
Dr. S. Shukla
Assistant Professor of Linguistics

"This definitive edition of the gita is, due to the extensive purports, a storehouse of ancient Vedic wisdom, poetry, politics and history. It should serve as a useful textbook for students and reference book for scholars of religion, as well as a general introduction to Vedic culture in general, not only from a scholar's point of view, but from that of a lifelong practitioner. It is this sense of devotion which Srila Prabhupada has captured in his discussion of the verses and which other commentators have failed to reveal. For this reason, Bhagavad-gita As It Is is an essential work for understanding the Indian religious tradition."
